It Makes Sense, But It Doesn't

I read something in a Robert Heinlein novel (don't remember which one. Please don't make me go look it up).

It seems there was a very old man who lived in a small town.   He was too old to work, and he hadn't saved up for his retirement.   The town fathers felt sorry for him, and decided to "give him a job."   Every morning, the old man would polish the brass cannon that sat on the Courthouse lawn.   The town fathers put him on the city payroll, and he got a small check every month.

Well, the old man was an ambitious type ... a go-getter.   So he saved up his money, little by little.   One day he quit his job, bought his own cannon ... and went into business for himself.

Now that story makes sense ... but it doesn't.   Reminds me of the story of the man who banged his head against a brick wall, over and over.   Someone asked him why he was doing it.   He said, "Because it feels so good when I stop."

That makes sense ... but it doesn't.

Sometimes when you're talking to Christians (those folks will say the damndest things), they'll make some ridiculous statement, and you try (patiently) to show them that their logic is fatally flawed.   It won't make any difference.   They're like the guy banging his head against the wall.   You feel sorry for him, and you try to help, but in the end, there's nothing you can do.

And eventually, you feel like you're banging your head against a wall.

I mean ... of course God loves you.   And of course he has to send you to hell for all eternity if you sin (he has no choice! It's YOUR fault!).   And of course the brutal, hideous killing of an innocent man is the answer to all the world's problems.   And of course you can't get to heaven just by living a good, moral life.
