Douglas MacArthur's First Wife

General Douglas MacArthur (1880-1964) wrote an autobiography entitled Reminiscences.   It's not a great book; MacArthur was known to be somewhat pompous and self-important, and he quotes at length from correspondence he received from various people.   If you're interested in the General's life, read William Manchester's American Caesar.

MacArthur was married twice.   His first marriage lasted seven years; he was young, and he married a "flapper" type.   She was late to her own wedding.   The marriage was doomed from the start.

His second wife was named Jean, and she was the love of his life; she actually called him "General" (not "sweetie" or "sugar-pie").   She gave him a son.   He has a great deal to say about her in his autobiography.

Here's what MacArthur tells us, in his autobiography, about his first wife:

"About that time I entered into matrimony, but it was not successful, ending in divorce some years later."

And that's all.   That is 100% of what he tells us about wife #1.   He doesn't say how long they were married, or where the wedding took place, or how old he was when he married her.   He doesn't even tell us her name!

It kind-of lets you know how he felt about her.
