Big Mistakes

If someone told you to sit down, right this second, and make a list of the biggest mistakes you ever made in your life, you could do it instantly.   Let's see ... there's that $100,000.00 worth of Enron stock I bought; that 1979 Pinto that I paid full price for back in 1978; and my marriage to Jennifer ...

I've often fantasized about having a time machine that would take me back to those critical moments in my life.

I'd visit my 11-year-old self on a certain special evening and say, "Bob, kid, don't get into an argument with your father tonight.   You'll regret it if you do.   You see, he's going to be in a car wreck tomorrow.   You're about to have the very last conversation you'll ever have with him."

I'd sit down with my 16-year-old self just before the start of the school year and I'd say, "Bob, kid, tomorrow you're going to meet a girl named Wendy.   Forget her.   Strike up a conversation with her overweight friend, Sarah, the one with the thick glasses.   Next year, Sarah's going to be hit with a huge dose of female hormones, and she'll turn into a '10,' and she'll inherit a couple of hotels from her grandfather.   Wendy will tell you she loves you, and then treat you like dirt."

Using my time machine, I could avoid all of the Big Mistakes in my life   -   the mistakes that caused me so much pain, and made me waste time (and money).

But that would be a bad idea.   We learn from our mistakes.   And the bigger the mistake, the bigger the lesson.

Sometimes the only thing worse than making a big mistake is not making a big mistake.   You are what you are, right now, because of those humiliating, painful lessons that you learned ... the hard way.

Live life to the fullest, and don't be afraid to make mistakes.   Living through those mistakes, surviving them, helped to make you what you are.   Living through those mistakes taught you a lot about yourself; you learned just how much you can endure.   Don't be timid; frightened people don't accomplish great things.   Sometimes you should go out on a limb.
