To me, a ritual tool that I made with my own hands has more meaning than something that I bought.
I made mine out of a straight, heavy, hardwood stick (to this day I don't know what kind of wood it is), about 11" long and 1.5" in diameter. I made a hollow place in one end and, using J.B. Kwik (an extremely powerful epoxy resin adhesive), I attached a nice quartz crystal to the end. After the glue had dried thoroughly, I wrapped twine around the joint where the crystal met the wood, and used a woodburning tool to burn a "Daeg" (Runic character) into the butt end.
Your wand can be plain or fancy. You can paint it, varnish it, or carve it. You can use a rough branch from a tree, or you can saw the end off of a hoe handle. Size isn't crucial. Some witches buy a small charm a pentagram, or a tiny image of some type, perhaps of the Goddess and affix it to the "business end."
I also made my own pentagram altar tile.
